I have been practicing Reiki since 95 and became a Master of Reiki in 2004, but I just recently decided to bring it to the public by running a huge local special. Throughout this special, I found myself explaining what it is over and over again despite having a page on my website devoted to explaining this treatment in detail. People came in literally AFRAID of what Reiki is or what it would do to them. The explanation that can be found online in some places can sometimes be a bit too esoteric for many especially in this area.

Wikipedia defines Reiki as: A spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Through the use of this technique, practitionersbelieve that they are transferring universal energy (i.e., reiki) in the form of qi (Japanese: ki) through the palms, which allows for self-healing and a state of equilibrium.

I teach Reiki as: A Japanese form of relaxation that includes laying on of hands in such a way that is similar to manual meditation. As the practitioner places his or her hands on or above the body the client in a sequential order, the client’s body eases into a state of relaxation. It is performed fully clothed, usually on a massage table.

Further, for most people mediation is very hard to accomplish. People just seem to be too caught up in “What did I forget to do this morning?” or “I have to be where at 3pm?” And as soon as that brain pattern starts, they give up on trying to meditate. With Reiki, right about the time, the brain begins wandering off onto one ofthose tangents, the sensation of the Reiki Practitioner’s movement to a new position brings the client back to their body and to the process of relaxation.

This struggle is a phenomenal thing to witness. It is because of this, that I have begun to explain Reiki as something of a Manual Meditation. Time after time, I have heard, “I can not believe how relaxing that was.” and even “Wow, I was more relaxed with that than I have ever been with a massage!.”

It is absolutely great for those minds that do not like to slow down on their own. It is great for those people who don’t want to get a massage, because being touched is just not up their ally.

Now, granted, Reiki can be as esoteric as a therapist wants to make it. I just wanted to point out that it does not have to be. It can be as simple as a single hand placement on a wounded knee.

In the Japanese language, Reiki is literally defined as Rei (Universal) Ki(Life force energy). It is the energy that is in everything. The energy is already in you! The therapist doesn’t put it there. There is no energy coming from the therapist and being zapped into a person like a laser. It is already there! The practice of Reiki simply balances out what is already there, kind of like balancing out the water in an ice cube tray.

Reiki isn’t anything to be worried about, it is not going to change your religion, it is not going to magically turn you into a peace loving hippy. Reiki will just help you into a state of relaxation where healing in your body can take place naturally.
I hope that this eases your mind a bit, and allows you to open up tothe possibility of a Reiki Treatment in your future.
